About Me

Dr. Gurminder Sandhu, Ph.D.
Licensed Psychologist (PSY34590)

Hi! Welcome to my practice, Marigold Psychology Center. I am a licensed psychologist with over 10 years of experience in helping individuals navigate their emotional and mental well-being. My journey in psychology began in high school, where I took my first psychology course and fell in love with learning about the brain, emotions, behavior, and how to help others. My first role in this field was as a peer helper in high school!

I earned my undergraduate degree in psychology at the University of California, Davis. Shortly after, I began my doctoral degree at the University of North Texas. I was able to move back to my home state to complete my pre-doctoral internship at the University of California, Irvine, and graduated with the Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology in 2014, with a Master’s in Psychology along the way. I also had the privilege of returning to UC Irvine for part of my post-doctoral training, and completed the remainder of my post-doctoral hours at The University of La Verne.

Therapeutic Approach
As a therapist using a person-centered approach, I believe everyone has the potential to grow and discover their true selves. My work is inspired by Carl Rogers, focusing on empathy, acceptance, and genuine connection.

In my sessions, I create a safe and supportive space where clients can share their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. I listen closely to understand each person’s unique experience, which helps build trust and encourages self-exploration. While my primary focus is person-centered therapy, I also draw from other approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and relational therapy, to provide a more tailored experience.

My goal is to empower clients to tap into their strengths and navigate challenges in a way that feels right for them. I support individuals on their journey toward personal growth, whether they are navigating the postpartum journey, dealing with cultural conflicts, or addressing issues like anxiety and stress. I am dedicated to helping clients find their way forward and lead more fulfilling lives. Together, we work on identifying goals and developing practical strategies for growth and healing.

Personal Philosophy
I believe that every individual has the capacity for change and growth. My role as a psychologist is to guide and empower my clients as they embark on their healing journeys. I am committed to fostering a collaborative relationship that honors each patient’s unique story.

The Marigold Flower
You might be wondering why I named my practice after a flower, especially one as bold as the marigold. The marigold holds great significance in my life, both professionally and personally. First, it is the flower for the birth month of October, and I received my license as a psychologist in this month, and although not in the same year, my private practice was also “born” in October. Marigolds symbolize resilience and strength, and thrive in a variety of conditions, which is a quality I have seen in myself as well.

Second, the marigold is significant in South Asian cultures as well as many other cultures around the world. It is a symbol of joy and positivity, and is often associated with warmth and happiness. In herbal medicine, marigolds are known for their healing properties and are often used in various treatments. Additionally, some cultures use marigolds in celebrations, rituals, or to ward off evil spirits, making them a protective symbol.
